What Is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui (or Wind and Water) is the practice of arranging your environment so that energy or “chi” flows gently and smoothly through your home or business environment.

Feng Shui is based on the concept that everything in your environment has a life force or energy called “chi.”

Just as chi flows through your body, chi also flows your through living environment. When the energy flow is stagnant (think clutter and overflowing closets), moves too quickly (think long dark hallways, stairs, and straight shots through the home), or is obstructed (think walls, trees, or even cars in the wrong place), the unbalanced chi may lead to ill health, domestic strife, or financial concerns.

Feng Shui adjustments can help you make sure that the chi energy flow is just right so that everything in your environment supports your wish for good luck, good health, harmonious relationships, and prosperity.

Using the Bagua

The success of these principles led to the application of Feng Shui to indoor furnishings, including everything from sofas and pictures to dishes and art objects. Practitioners of Feng Shui developed the bagua, a Feng Shui map that indicates where in the home specific enhancements are to be applied.

The bagua is placed over the floor plan of a home (or room) and shows the location of nine main areas of energy in every home: Helpful People/Travel, Children/Creativity, Relationships and Romance, Fame, Wealth, Family, and Self Development.

The Feng Shui practitioner arranges the home to bring “good luck” to these areas and to make sure the chi flows smoothly so that each area on the bagua map is nurtured and energized.

An 8-Point Guide to a Feng Shui House

Each spot in your home is associated with a different aspect of your life. Here’s a beginner’s guide to cultivating positive energy in every zone.
By Nicole Sforza

Stand inside your home with your back to the front door.* Look forward. The part of your home in the far left corner is the money sector. The far right corner is the relationship zone. Got it? You work the magic by placing certain items in certain zones; some have symbolic power, others a literal connection to the area. The eight-point system is intricate and layered; feng shui expert Catherine Brophy shares her best feng shui tips for making every room in your house feel calm and happy.

*This map applies not only to each floor of your home but also to each room. Stand in the doorway to orient yourself and get a handle on which corner is which. If your room has more than one doorway, use its main entrance.

Money: Place fresh flowers or a jade plant here. This is also a good spot in which to keep cash or a valuable treasure.

Reputation: The place to display awards, accolades, and good-luck symbols, like four-leaf clovers.

Relationships: Bring in pairs (especially potent are lovebirds, butterflies, and cranes) or an image of two trees intertwined. If your living room is in this area, place a love seat, a pair of pillows, or two matching chairs here.

Children and creativity: Ideal for a bulletin board or a craft or sewing zone. If you don’t have kids, use this spot to indulge your inner child with bold wallpaper or chalkboard paint.

Friends and travel: Nice for funny, playful photos, artwork made by pals, or a map that reminds you of a favorite trip (or a journey that you hope to take).

Career: This area should be as well lit as possible. If it falls around your entry, hang a bright pendant or chandelier. Put something here that relates to your passion and/or your job. A scientist might want a quotation from Einstein. If you play music, keep your instrument here.

Knowledge: Create a reading nook or an intimate spot for conversation. If you meditate, this is a great place for it.

Family and health: It’s really important to keep this area clean. (You know, if you don't have your health...) And it’s the perfect spot for a family-photo wall.

6 Feng Shui Tips To Invite Great Energy Into Your Home
by Amanda Gibby Peters
July 13, 2014

Sparkly lights are strung, and colorful bouquets line the tables. Music is playing, candles are flickering, and delicious food is party platter ready.

As you await the arrival of your guests, you realize invitations were never sent. After all that preparation, how likely is it anyone will show up?

In feng shui, the front door is that detail. What happens inside the home matters very much, but without consideration and care of the front door, our intentions are suddenly diminished.

The front door is where we entice auspicious energy into our homes. And to be clear: this is the architecturally-intended front door of a house. Energy goes where the eye does, so it’s worth making the entrance entrancing.

When an entryway is beautiful and benevolent, we invite possibilities and opportunities into our homes. And with that kind of energy flowing through our space, it has a mighty impressive ripple effect in our lives.

Give the front door dedicated attention, and you create a sweet spot for generously auspicious energy to gather on your behalf. Here are a few simple suggestions to get the good vibes flowing your way:

1. Make the space outside the door as appealing as possible.

Replace any burned out lights with brighter wattage. Wipe down the front door and its hardware. Buy a new doormat, or shake out the one you currently use. Strive to keep this space clean and approachable. And if you can do nothing else, sweep. It’s a simple ritual that maintains pleasing space and calls forth marvelous energy.

2. Infuse the front path or porch with color and fragrance.

Pathways are analogous to opportunities finding their way to us. Healthy plants and bright flowers elevate beauty and suggest good health. Maintain both, and it’s a magnetic invitation to whatever you desire in your life.

3. Hang a wind chime outside the front door.

When the wind rustles, the pirouetting rods harness invisible and wildly good energy for you. And as the wind chime sings, it draws attention to the space, inviting more opportunities into your life.

4. Maintain a visible address.

Refresh it, if necessary: a quick polish to the numbers or a few new screws to firmly hold them in place, a fresh coat of paint to update a faded curb address, or a well-posted name in an apartment building will ensure energy knows exactly where to find you.

5. Use the front door daily.

Most of us enter our homes through a secondary door. However, feng shui holds that the really potent, boundless energy available prefers the front door, if invited. Make it a routine to open the door at least once a day. When we do, we intrigue bounty and abundance into our lives.

6. Keep the front door clutter-free.

The wider a door opens, the more open we become to unlimited resources and opportunities. If there is unnecessary clutter afoot, find a home for it. Designate a basket for shoes and sports equipment, place a tray nearby for keys and mail, and install hooks to hang anything else that might otherwise linger on the floor.

When the front door is left neglected, it suggests resources — time, money, and energy — are in short supply. And that feeling deposits undesirable vibes outside our home. An intentionally inviting door, however, tells the story that safety, comfort, and beauty reside just beyond its threshold.

Opportunity passes our front doors every day. If she likes what she sees, she brings her gorgeous energy to the doorstep. Feng shui has long observed that the front door represents our relationship with the world. When it's captivating and positive, that is the kind of energy that shows up and channels throughout the rest of our home.

Let your creative juices loose here. Whether you add thriving plants, mega-watt lights, or something else delightfully irresistible, it all beckons the good life to find its way to your front door!

Feng Shui: A Beginner's Guide
08 February 2017

The bagua, used to take measurements of a building to define its orientation

3 common myths to avoid

People tend to falsely believe that feng shui is...

a quick fix for all of your problems
a superstitious or magical belief system, or a New Age system
a luxury only the rich and famous can afford

Applying feng shui to your home

Symmetry and the yin and yang principle are key.  The main aim is to find balance and harmony in your life through environmental analysis. Feng shui allows you to discover the potential of your home and make it work for you. I can draw up an energetic map of your home that relates to your desires, whether that's wealth, health or good relationships.

Bedrooms:

I look at beams, windows and wall decoration, especially above the bed. Positioning the bed under a beam can cause health issues, and wall decoration such as paintings above the bed affects the quality of your sleep.

Living rooms:

Try to avoid sitting under beams or with your back to a window, which can make you feel uncomfortable and restless. Closed or covered bookshelves improve the energy of a space, making the room more harmonious, balanced and peaceful.
Fire and wood elements shape Gert Voorjans' bedroom. The fire element is represented by red and lilac, while wood translates into wooden furniture, fabric and rugs. The small red tulu rug adds the fire element.

9 tips for the layout of your home

There should be an open space on the inside of the main door - no wall, bathroom or stove.
Avoid a straight line from the front to a back door or window.
The back of the house must be quiet.
No bathrooms or utility rooms at the center of the house.
Stoves should not be seen from the front door.
The house cannot be divided in half by a hallway or staircase, as this causes divisions in the household.
Doors should not be in alignment with beds.
Place every bed against a solid wall.

    Toilets cannot be:

    in alignment with beds
    opposite the main door
    above the main door
opposite or in alignment with the stove

Colours

Your favourable and unfavourable colours come from astrological analysis. From my experience, intuitive people are automatically attracted to their favourable colours, but this isn't always true.

Elements

If you favour fire, for instance, I would suggest making use of candles and the colours red, orange and purple. Having a fireplace in your home would also be ideal.

7 tips for workspaces

Clean out your desk drawers and filing cabinets. Throw out, or recycle, anything you haven't used in six months.
    Do not face a wall.
Face a window for yang energy.
Do not sit in alignment with a door. The spot furthest from the door is a "protected" location, and we perform better at work when we feel safe and supported.
Sit with your back to a solid wall. The back is the vulnerable yin side. It governs the quality of your health and relationships.
To your left should be the most active energy - i.e. doors and windows. The left is the yang side, associated with male energy. It influences material opportunities, wealth and prosperity. If you cannot place your desk in this position, place a television, CD player or another object that generates activity.
To your right should be quiet energy. The right is the receptive yin side, associated with female energy. Place heavy pieces of furniture here.

How To Create Good Feng Shui in Your Home
By Rodika Tchi

7 Feng Shui Steps To A Harmonious Home

Getting started with feng shui for your house & home can be easy when you start with the house basics and gradually move on to the more complex feng shui levels. To help you get started with good feng shui in your home, here are some helpful feng shui house steps for beginners.

Clear Your Clutter for Good Feng Shui

    1. Clear Out Your Clutter, get rid of everything you do not love in your house. Clutter clearing is a time-and-energy-consuming process that will feel like therapy, but it will help you "lighten up the load," so to speak. Do not skip this step, as it is an essential one in creating harmonious house feng shui energy.

Get Good Quality Air and Light

    2. Have Good Quality Air and Good Quality Light in your house. These two elements are essential for good feng shui energy (called Chi) in your home. Open the windows often, introduce feng shui air-purifying plants or use an air purifier. Allow as much natural light as possible into your home, and consider using full-spectrum lights.

Define Your Energy Map

Feng shui bagua (also known as Pakua or Ba-Gua) is the feng shui energy map of any space. To create good energy in your home or office, define the feng shui bagua of your space and balance its feng shui energies accordingly. (c) Rodika Tchi

    3. Define the Bagua, or the feng shui energy map of your house, by using one of the two main feng shui methods - the classical school bagua or the BTB grid. Once you define the bagua, you will know which areas of your home are connected to specific areas of your life. For example, in traditional feng shui, the Southeast feng shui area of your home is connected to the flow of money energy in your life.

Get the Basics of 5 Feng Shui Elements

The theory of five feng shui elements is one of the main concepts in the ancient art of feng shui. The five feng shui elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. These feng shui elements interact in many ways, such as productive and destructive cycles. (c) Rodika Tchi

    4. Get the Basics of 5 Feng Shui Elements in order to create balance and vibrant energy in all areas of your home. For example, if you are working on attracting more prosperity, you will introduce the feng shui elements of Wood and Water in the Southeast area of your house. If your need to improve your health, you will place lush wood feng shui element items, such as plants or pieces of wood furniture in the East area.

Find Out Your Feng Shui Birth Element

    5. Find Out Your Feng Shui Birth Element and create a home to nourish and support your energy. For example, if your own element is Fire, you need to introduce the expressions of Fire feng shui element, such as the Fire element colors (red, orange, purple, magenta, pink, yellow), triangular shapes, etc. You will also need a strong Wood element in your home, as Wood feeds the Fire element.

Find Out Your Kua Number and Your Lucky Directions

    6. Find Out Your Kua Number and Your Lucky Directions so that you can be energized by good energy from your best or lucky feng shui directions. Adjust the position of your bed, your desk, the seating in your dining area, etc. For example, if your Kua number is 1, it is best to face one of the following directions: Southeast, East, South, and North.

Always Be Mindful of the Quality of Energy in Your Home

    7. Always Be Mindful of the Energy in Your Home and how its energy influences your well-being. Make a habit of paying close attention to the so-called feng shui "trinity" that is deeply connected to your health - your bedroom, your bathroom and your kitchen. Nothing is static in the world of energy, so be wise and keep your home healthy and happy.

Feng Shui Home Steps Summary

After you have mastered these 7 home feng shui steps, you can explore the deeper levels of feng shui, such as the annual movement of feng shui stars, or energies. Be sure to start with the basic steps, though, to have fun and to thoroughly enjoy the process. This is good feng shui!
